Laguépie, a village on a hill

Laguépie is a village built on water (though it is not actually crossed by the Tarn or the Garonne rivers!), divided by the Viaur until a bridge was built at the end of the 19th century. The village houses, often quite tall, are built around the waterways, and the town boasted numerous hotels at its peak in the 19th and 20th centuries. Shops were often built in front of these establishments.

Laguépie developed through trade, thanks to its train station which facilitated the transport of food, as well as regional products essential to the economy: lime, wool, grain, and more. The old grain market stands as a testament to this rich commercial past. The church in Laguépie is recent, built in the Neo-Gothic style and located in the center of the village, whereas an older church once stood on the hilltop. It is from this hilltop that you can enjoy a lovely viewpoint overlooking the entire village of Laguépie.

A second, beautifully flower-adorned bridge crosses the Aveyron River. It too played a role in the village's development and dates from the same period as the train station (late 19th century ). A little further on, you'll see an old mill on the Aveyron, dating from the 18th century. Interestingly, it was converted into a power plant that provided electricity to the village in the early 20th century. Continue your walk towards the Viaur River. In summer, a swimming area is set up, much to the delight of locals and visitors alike. It's a refreshing and lively spot, with riverside cafes and a cheerful atmosphere!

Laguépie Castle

The castle, located on the opposite bank of the Viaur River, dates back to the 11th century. The Château de Saint-Martin de Laguépie has been open to the public since 2006. Traces of human habitation in Laguépie go back a very long time; its castle has been home to a lord since the 12th century. Destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade, the town was rebuilt due to its strategic location. It suffered further ravages during the Wars of Religion, and its castle, once again razed, was used as a stone quarry for the village houses from the 18th century onwards. The castle is now owned by the Laguépie Town Hall, and the villagers have created the Lou Viel Castel association to preserve and promote this local heritage. It can be visited in the summer and during certain special events. The proceeds from visits are used for major renovations to consolidate the structure. Visits are free and self-guided.
