Discover Albi in one day

Saint Cecilia Cathedral

Albi Cathedral of Saint Cecilia

It's hard to miss the Cathedral of Sainte-Cécile, which dominates the city by its size and color. Its brick fortress silhouette is a symbol of Southern Gothic, aimed at asserting the power of the Church after the crusade against the Albigensians. The exterior, typical of Occitan brick architecture, contrasts with an interior of abundant richness.

This brick fortress is the largest brick cathedral in the world. Its exterior contrasts dramatically with its interior, which is entirely covered in colorful frescoes. Even more unusual, the cathedral is home to pairs of peregrine falcons at the top of the bell tower.

Don't miss the opportunity to admire " The Last Judgment", a monumental and spectacular fresco located under the organ.

The Berbie Palace and the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum

Bervie Palace and Lautrec Museum Albi

Right next to the religious building stands the Palais de la Berbie, a former fortified residence of the bishops. This building is one of the oldest and best-preserved in France. It is now famous for housing the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum. The latter pays homage to the post-impressionist painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a native of Albi.

Allow at least 1.5 hours to appreciate its famous posters and paintings.

The Tarn is full of museums not to be missed.

The gardens of the Palais de la Berbie

Garden of the Berbie Palace Albi

After the intensity of a museum visit, these gardens offer a well-deserved moment of relaxation. Laid out on the former rampart terraces, they promise breathtaking views of the Tarn, the Pont-Vieux, and the opposite bank. They are often compared to the famous Tuileries Gardens in Paris (in miniature!).

This is the perfect place for a photo break and to observe the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral from a different perspective. It's no coincidence that this must-see monument is one of the best photo spots in the Tarn !

Visit Albi and its Old Bridge

The Old Albi Bridge

Built in the 11th century, the Pont-Vieux d'Albi is a medieval engineering feat and one of the oldest bridges in France still in use. It enabled the city's economic growth by facilitating trade. Today, it also provides the most classic and spectacular viewpoint over the entire Episcopal City.

Photography enthusiasts, the Tarn-Aveyron Guide advises you to head to the opposite bank to capture the cathedral and the Palais de la Berbie in a single shot. At sunrise or sunset, the photos will be magnificent!

The banks of the Tarn

Ah, the banks of the Tarn... Can you hear the comforting lapping of the water? The Tarn has always played a central role in Albi's history, from transporting bricks for the construction of monuments to irrigation. The banks were developed to allow for a relaxing stroll along the water. It's perfect for giving yourself a moment of calm during this marathon day of sightseeing in Albi.

Rent a pedal boat or opt for a traditional boat ride to see the ramparts of the Episcopal City from a completely new perspective.

The historic district of Castelviel and its belvedere

Castelviel district of Albi
Castelviel district of Albi

The beating heart of Old Albi, the Castelviel district is one of the areas most steeped in history, dating back well before the construction of the current cathedral. It is here that we find the most beautiful expressions of Albi's medieval civil architecture, with its maze of cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses and private mansions. The district rises gently towards a strategic high point.

Don't miss Rue Saint-Loup ! This street best embodies Old Albi. It's a veritable open-air museum, and the perfect place to capture the soul of Albi.

The collegiate church and cloister of Saint-Salvi

Saint Salvi Cloister Albi

Less imposing than Sainte-Cécile, the collegiate church of Saint-Salvi is nevertheless the oldest church in Albi. It is essential for understanding the religious and architectural evolution of the town. Its style is an interesting blend of Romanesque architecture (its base) and Gothic architecture (its bell tower). The adjoining cloister, of great sobriety, is a rare example of medieval art in the Tarn.

Fancy a break in the heart of Albi? The Saint-Salvi cloister garden opens its doors to you for a moment of complete tranquility.

The covered market of Albi

Albi covered market

All these visits have made us hungry! A symbol of the gluttony of the southwest, the covered market is the meeting place between local producers and locals. It is a must for those who want to taste the flavors of the Tarn. Cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and of course Albi specialties, can be found on the stalls.

The market is open every morning from Tuesday to Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as on all public holidays.

Why is it absolutely essential to visit Albi?

An exceptional historical heritage listed by UNESCO

Albi is certainly a historic city, but it is also a unique example of medieval and religious architecture. Its urban landscape, almost entirely built of red brick, earned it its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

The complex formed by the Cathedral of Saint Cecilia and the Palais de la Berbie symbolizes the power of the bishops and the Southern Gothic style. Exploring the medieval streets of Albi is like stepping back in time, walking in the footsteps of ancient bishops, and discovering an incredibly well-preserved historic center.

Even better: Albi is one of the rare communes in France to offer such a homogeneous architectural ensemble, making it a privileged destination for history and architecture enthusiasts in Occitania.

An incomparable sweetness of life

Aside from the cultural attractions, it's the atmosphere that captivates day visitors. Albi strikes the perfect balance between its status as a city of art and history and its friendly southwestern atmosphere.

Visiting Albi: our practical advice

How to get to the city of Albi?

Getting to and around Albi is very easy, provided you know a few tips, especially if you're coming by car. The historic heart of Albi is largely pedestrianized, which guarantees a pleasant stroll.

  • By car : Albi is well served by the A68 motorway, which connects it directly to Toulouse (approximately 1 hour). This is the most flexible option.
  • By train : Albi SNCF train station is located just a 10-15 minute walk from the city center. Regular services are available from Toulouse and other major cities in the region.

Getting around Albi

Once you arrive, it's best to forget about your vehicle.

  • On foot : Almost all of Albi's must-see attractions (Cathedral, Palais de la Berbie, Vieux-Albi) are within walking distance of each other. The city center is ideal for exploring on foot, a great way to enjoy slow tourism!
  • By bus and shuttle : The city of Albi has an efficient transport network. Even better: the municipality offers free electric shuttles ("Navettes Cœur de Ville") that run between the car parks and the pedestrianized historic heart, a very convenient service for day visitors.

Parking and parking

If you come by car, parking is the main concern.

  • For your day trip, the Vigan car park (underground and paying) is the most central, giving you immediate access to the shopping streets and the Episcopal City.
  • For a more economical solution, choose the overflow car parks (P+R) located on the outskirts of the city (for example, the Madeleine car park) and then take advantage of the free shuttles mentioned above to reach the heart of Albi. This is the most recommended option for a full day.
