Visit Réalmont, a royal fortified town!

Réalmont is located between Albi and Castres, it is a fortified town that comes alive on Wednesdays with its weekly market. Come and stroll through its narrow, parallel and perpendicular streets, arranged around its square with covered arcades. In the center of the Tarn, it is a popular destination for nature sports, hiking, walks... First, stop by the fortified town to stock up on provisions and discover its heritage!

Visit Réalmont at the pace of its streets and beautiful medieval houses

To walk around, follow the interpretation panels and let yourself be guided. It's easy to find your way around because everything starts from the central square where the church and its covered arcades are located. The main shops are located there. You can easily park in the square to start your walk. The Tourist Office can give you a paper map to follow the historical circuit.

Réalmont is not the only bastide in the region. There are many new towns, which benefited from the desire, from the ^11th to the ^13th century, to create healthy and well-organized towns to facilitate transactions between the villages, allow the expansion of agriculture and trade, the grouping of populations around a Seigneurial power. Réalmont dates from 1272 and it was at the request of Philippe le Hardi King of France, that the bastide was founded (Mont Royal). Note that it is not very common for a bastide to have a church (Notre-Dame-du-Taur Church of Réalmont) in the center of its arcaded square. In general, these new towns also mark the beginning of an independence between the power of the Lords and the church. Take a stroll to appreciate the half-timbered houses, the corbelled floors (wider than the ground surface), the straight streets and the small heritage sites such as the wash houses and fountains.

• In Teillet not far away, go see the enigmatic Château de Grandval, it dates from the ^15th century and its ruins stand in the middle of the waters, because after a tragic story, it found itself drowned by the waters of a dam reservoir!
• The major highlights of Réalmont are its agricultural fair in April, the friendly, family-friendly night markets in July and August, the Re'Al Croche Festival for North American music in July, as well as a mineral fair at the same time.
