Lautrec, the medieval village and its ramparts

Life is good here, and nature is as bountiful as the remnants of Lautrec 's history, which you'll experience through its heritage. Park in front of the hill and enter the village through the Porte de Caussade, a breach in its old ramparts. Admire its half-timbered houses with corbelled upper stories, then stroll towards its central square (renovated in 2002 with beautiful cobblestones) with its covered arcades dating back to the 15th century. The market is held there every Friday morning, a great opportunity to discover local producers, including those of pink garlic.

Although the painter Toulouse-Lautrec had his origins in Lautrec, you will have to go to the Palais de la Berbie in Albi to admire his works.

THE SALETTE MILL, A VIEWPOINT OVER THE BLACK MOUNTAIN

You are in the Agout region, facing the Montagne Noire, which can be admired from the fantastic viewpoint atop the hill where the Salette windmill stands. Built in 1688, it was restored starting in 1990 and still operates on certain days during the summer months. With its large, gently turning sails, it promises a picturesque and bucolic panorama.

THE COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SAINT-RÉMY AND THE LAND OF PASTEL

You'll notice the pretty blue shutters, a color that's omnipresent at the Collegiate Church of Saint-Rémy. Lautrec is near the Pays de Cocagne, famous for its cultivation of Isatis tinctoria, dyer's woad, used as a remedy since antiquity but also as a dye to make pastel blue. The plant is yellow, but it's oxidation in the air that produces this soft, deep blue color, very popular in the Toulouse region and the Gers.

The Collegiate Church dates from the end of the 14th century, it measures 40 meters long and is among the oldest buildings in the village.
