  • English
    • Nicknamed the "Little Venice of Languedoc," Castres is a charming town in the Tarn department of the Occitanie region. Its identity is strongly influenced by the Agout River, which flows through it, offering a unique spectacle: the houses on the Agout. These former tanners', weavers', and dyers' houses, with their colorful and picturesque facades, line the riverbanks directly above the water, reminiscent of Venetian scenery and forming the town's most iconic image. They are among the most beautiful photo spots in the Tarn.

Castres is also an important cultural center thanks to its Goya Museum. Housed in the former bishop's palace, a masterpiece of classical architecture designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart (the architect of Versailles), this museum boasts the largest collection of Spanish art in France after the Louvre. Visitors can admire major works by Francisco de Goya as well as those of other great Spanish masters.

The city's history is deeply rooted in its Protestant past, making it a stronghold of Protestantism in the 16th century. The Bishop's Garden, also designed by Le Nôtre, offers a haven of peace and a pleasant view of the episcopal palace.

Today, Castres is also renowned for its rugby, driven by Castres Olympique (CO), whose successes passionately energize the entire city.
