The Mazamet footbridg ...

What if we crossed the Arnette Gorges , but 70m above the void ? Safely, use the Mazamet Footbridge to reach the very pretty village of Hautpoul . Like an eagle's nest, this small medieval village is nestled against the cliff , facing the town of Mazamet and its footbridge. Adventurers can also come by zip line , because there is a via ferrata on the rocks supporting Hautpoul! A beautiful day in perspective, take your camera!

A footbridge over the void

What a great idea! This project dates back to 2018 and allows you to walk along a footbridge held by large steel cables stretched 140m above the void, where the small Arnette river flows. Impressive from every angle, the Mazamet footbridge is perfectly safe and free. You can use it in either direction. It is stable but be careful, if you are afraid of heights, you may not be comfortable halfway through, as it rocks a bit...

Park in the Jamarié car park (be careful, it's very hot in summer, so come early to park in the shade). Then follow the signs and choose the longer path with a pleasant slope or the shorter path with a steep incline. At the end of the footbridge is the village of Hautpoul!

It's at this point, just before the footbridge, that you'll turn off to take the via ferrata. Read our article on the Mazamet via ferrata !

The village of Hautpoul

It is not very big, but its medieval atmosphere will transport you to the past and its view will take your breath away! Enter Hautpoul, there are only 2 streets! At the entrance to the Montagne Noire, it is perched on a rocky peak more than 300m higher than Mazamet. This village is at the origin of Mazamet, because the inhabitants abandoned it to settle lower down in the Arnette Valley. After being ravaged by the wars of religion, Hautpoul is reborn thanks to tourism.

Come and enjoy a treat at the Taverne d'Hautpoul ! Traditional Tarn cuisine or Portuguese cuisine!

Enjoy its shops and restaurants , its artists' studios, and its hiking trails. Climb up to the Rocher de la Vierge to enjoy the most beautiful view of Mazamet. From the terraces of the old castle, you can also admire the Arnette Valley. Enjoy the pretty medieval garden on the mountainside with explanations about medicinal and dyeing plants.

Be careful, the whole village is very steep, so wear good shoes! Of course, you can access Hautpoul via the Rocher de la Vierge road, if you don't want to take the footbridge!

We wish you a great holiday in the Tarn!
