Villefranche-de-Rouergue

It's the sub-prefecture of Aveyron! Villefranche-de-Rouergue was founded in 1252 by Alphonse de Poitiers. This medieval new town is made up of narrow, medieval streets, all leading to the heart of the village at Place Notre-Dame. It boasts a bell tower-porch, the Collegiate Church with its covered walkways, characteristic of bastide towns. The town has been awarded two prestigious labels: "City of Art and History" and "Grand Site Midi-Pyrénées".

Najac

Najac, a small medieval village perched high on a hill, stretches along a single street. In the 13th century, this street was enlarged to create a large square that would become the heart of the bastide. At the end of the road, discover the fortified castle, a listed historical monument, with its many secret passages. The view from the village heights is breathtaking! Najac is particularly pleasant in the warmer months, when the artisans' shops are open, showcasing the region's craftsmanship. Good to know: The GR36 long-distance hiking trail passes through Najac and leads to Laguépie!

Villeneuve d'Aveyron

Villeneuve d'Aveyron is situated on a causse (a dry, sparsely vegetated plateau). It was transformed into a bastide town during the Albigensian Crusade. Its winding streets, towers, and half-timbered houses transport us back to the Middle Ages. The town features typical bastide architecture, including the Place des Conques and pointed arches.

Sauveterre-de-Rouergue

Sauveterre-de-Rouergue is one of the most beautiful villages in France! In the heart of the Ségala region, this former royal bastide is home to the magnificent Saint-Christophe collegiate church. The bastide boasts one of the largest arcaded squares in Rouergue, of which there are 47. Stroll through the narrow streets to appreciate the harmony of the stone and half-timbered houses, and the heritage preserved in this medieval village. The natural heritage of the Causse de Sauveterre is remarkable.

La Bastide-l'Évêque

La Bastide-l'Évêque was built to rival the bastide of Villefranche-de-Rouergue in the Middle Ages. The grid pattern of streets at right angles is preserved, as is the central square where the Saint-Dalmas church stands. Its distinctive character stems from its former industrial activity, where numerous trip hammers hammered copper to form the "black cut," essential for making cauldrons.

Rieupeyroux

Rieupeyroux, 30 minutes from Rodez in the Haut Ségala region, was built in the 13th century on a former seigniorial estate in the Ségala. It displays the typical features of a bastide town, with its perpendicular streets and the Place du Gitat, the village center. The Church of Saint Martial, a listed historical monument, and the Griffouls fountain are worth discovering during your visit.
