A medieval country house

Founded in 1280 by Bishop Raymond de Calmont, La Bastide-l'Évêque is one of the five bastides of western Rouergue. Its geometric plan, with streets that intersect at right angles and a central square, is typical of this type of medieval city.

The bishop wanted to compete with the neighboring town of Villefranche-de-Rouergue and assert his power. The presence of silver deposits and abundant forests favored the development of this new city.

Today, the bastide has retained its original plan, with its Saint-Dalmas church on the central square and its half-timbered houses.

A unique industrial site

La Bastide-l'Évêque was famous for its Lézert hammers, hydraulic forges used to beat copper. These hammers, located in the Aveyron gorges, are today witnesses to the past industrial activity of the region. The remains of these hammers, as well as the surrounding landscapes, make La Bastide-l'Évêque a unique and remarkable industrial site.
