A weekend in Rodez

Day 1: Rodez, city of art and history

In the morning: a stroll through the old town

Begin your visit in the historic heart of Rodez. The city has preserved a network of pedestrian streets lined with half-timbered houses and private mansions dating from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Take the time to locate the Tour Raynalde, the only remaining vestige of the old ramparts that protected the city in the 15th century, before continuing on to the Episcopal Palace and the chapel of the former Jesuit college, both dating from the 17th century.

This journey through the ancient stones will naturally lead you to Notre-Dame Cathedral, a true emblem of the city. Its construction spanned nearly three centuries, until its completion in the 16th century, and its bell tower reaches a height of almost 90 meters, one of the tallest in France for a building in the southern Gothic style. Take the time to admire the sculptures and stonework on the facades before entering to explore the interior.

For lunch, the city centre is full of places to take a lunch break between visits.

In the afternoon: the Soulages Museum

Next, head to the Soulages Museum, undoubtedly the most anticipated visit of any trip to Rodez. Inaugurated in 2014 in a contemporary building clad in Corten steel that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, the museum houses one of the world's most important collections dedicated to the painter born in Rodez, the result of several donations from the artist and his wife to the community. Visitors can follow Soulages ' entire career, from his early work to his explorations of black and light, known as Outrenoir (Beyond Black).

End the day with a stroll along the Aveyron, the river that gave its name to the department, or with a visit to one of the markets that enliven the town several times a week if your visit coincides with one of these days.

Day 2: Museums and heritage around Rodez

In the morning: the Fenaille Museum

Spend your morning at the Fenaille Museum, housed in a former private mansion in the city center. It boasts the largest French collection of menhir statues, unique prehistoric sculptures that bear witness to several millennia of history in the Aveyron region. It's an ideal complement to a visit to the Soulages Museum : here you'll move seamlessly from contemporary art to the oldest art preserved in the region.

If time allows, the Denys-Puech Museum of Fine Arts, dedicated to this sculptor from Rodez and the art of his time, is a great way to round off the morning for art lovers.

The afternoon: a nature escape

For the second part of your stay, you have two options depending on your preferences.

• As a family, head to the outdoor or water activities that the Rodez area has to offer.
• In search of wide open spaces, head towards the Trou de Bozouls, about twenty minutes away by car: this spectacular natural canyon, carved by the Dourdou river over the centuries, offers an impressive view from the belvedere of the perched village of Bozouls.

Conques, an essential stop on the Camino de Santiago

Just under an hour's drive from Rodez, Conques is undoubtedly the most emblematic village of the Aveyron. Nestled in a narrow valley, it has preserved an almost intact architecture of half-timbered houses with slate or schist roofs, which earns it its classification among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.

The heart of the visit is the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy, a jewel of Romanesque art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. Don't miss its sculpted tympanum depicting the Last Judgment, one of the major works of Romanesque sculpture in France. Inside, the treasury of medieval goldwork houses a remarkable collection of reliquaries, including the famous reliquary statue of Saint Foy, covered in gold and precious stones, one of only five such treasures in Europe, and the only one in France.

Villefranche-de-Rouergue, the great bastide of Rouergue

About forty minutes from Rodez, Villefranche-de-Rouergue is one of the largest medieval bastides in France, founded in 1252. The heart of the town is organized around the Place Notre-Dame, lined with arcades and Gothic houses, a typical checkerboard plan of 13th-century bastides.

The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, completed after three centuries of construction, is well worth a visit for its sculpted choir stalls and the view over the city from the top of its bell tower, accessible by climbing more than 150 steps. Nearby, the Saint-Sauveur Charterhouse, one of the finest Gothic ensembles in the region, and the Chapel of the Black Penitents, with its Baroque decor, complete the city's religious heritage.

Najac, the village perched on its rocky spur

Perched on a ridge above a bend in the Aveyron River, Najac 's houses line a single street leading to its royal fortress, a 12th-13th century castle that overlooks the valley. The climb to the keep, from which the view extends over the surrounding area, is one of the highlights of a visit to the village.

Najac is equally suited to a leisurely stroll through its narrow streets as to a sporting stopover: the village is a recognized stop on the Way of St. James and the Aveyron gorges that surround it allow you to extend the day with a nature activity.
