Want to explore Tarn-et-Garonne without spending a penny ? It's entirely possible! Between its countryside landscapes, hilltop villages and natural treasures, the department is full of free activities for all tastes. Whether you're a hiking enthusiast, a history buff or simply curious, get ready to discover Tarn-et-Garonne in a different light by enjoying its most beautiful riches.
Perched on a hilltop, Lauzerte, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, is an ideal destination for exploring on foot at no cost. One of the first things to do is to lose yourself in its charming alleys. You will discover a rich architectural heritage, with magnificent medieval and half-timbered facades. Don't miss its historic squares, such as the Place du Château. This stroll is an opportunity to admire the details that make the town so charming.
For a more original experience, can you find the " Coin relevé " on the Place des Cornières ? This unusual work of art gives the illusion that the corner of the square is raised, creating a unique perspective and an excellent photo subject. It's a perfect starting point for further exploration.
And if you still have a little time, the Tarn-Aveyron Guide recommends:
Hop on your bikes and explore the landscapes of Tarn-et-Garonne. The department boasts a network of well-developed greenways and cycle paths, ideal for rides of a few hours or entire days.
The most famous greenway is undoubtedly the one that runs along the Canal de Garonne, an integral part of the Canal des Deux Mers cycle route. This flat, shaded route is perfect for all levels.
From Montech to Moissac, follow the Montech Canal and its impressive Water Slope, then join the Canal de Garonne. The path will take you through peaceful landscapes, lined with plane trees, to the abbey town of Moissac and its UNESCO-listed cloister.
The route offers breathtaking views of orchards, cornfields and vineyards. It is an opportunity to discover the agricultural wealth of Tarn-et-Garonne, notably the famous Ente plum.

The Tarn-Aveyron Guide tested the crossing by bike, along the Canal des 2 mers.
Did you know? The department has been awarded the "Accueil Vélo" (Cycle Welcome) label, guaranteeing the presence of services adapted to cyclists (rental, repairs, accommodation) along the routes.
Taking on the Montech Water Slope is a fascinating and completely free activity. This engineering work, unique in France, is a boat lift. It allows barges to overcome a drop of 13.30 meters in just a few minutes, thus replacing the succession of five locks.
Did you know? Commissioned in 1974, the Montech Water Slope was designed to improve navigation on the Canal de Garonne. After being shut down in 2009, it was renovated and enhanced in 2021. Today, it is no longer in service for the transport of goods, but remains a major tourist attraction and a symbol of river heritage.
The Water Slope consists of a 443-meter-long inclined plane. A rolling machine, driven by two powerful electric locomotives, pushes a wedge of water onto the inclined plane. This "plug" of water allows the barge to be raised or lowered. It is an impressive spectacle of efficiency and ingenuity.
There's nothing better than a breath of fresh air for a successful vacation! It's also the pleasure of discovering the nature and landscapes of Tarn-et-Garonne. The river, which crosses the department from south to north, is lined with towpaths and trails that offer peaceful walks for all levels.
This is one of the best places to enjoy the river. Starting from the port of Moissac, the banks are open to the general public. This is an opportunity to admire the Napoleon Bridge as well as the Cacor Canal Bridge which majestically spans the Garonne. The walk is flat and easy, ideal for a family outing.
Numerous trails, marked by the French Hiking Federation (FFRP), allow you to discover loops that run along or over the Garonne. Tourist offices provide maps of these circuits. These trails will take you through fields, forests and villages to admire magnificent views of the river valley.
Our practical advice:

Lovers of nature and wide open spaces ? The next visit is once again completely free. The site, located at the confluence of the Tarn and the Garonne, is a true haven of peace for biodiversity. It is particularly renowned for its bird sanctuary.
This wetland, classified as a Regional Nature Reserve, is a place of migration and nesting for many species of birds: herons, egrets, swans, wild ducks and many species of passerines. Information panels are installed along the trails to help you identify the different species.
Likewise, marked paths allow you to easily walk in the reserve.
Observatories and " hiding places " are set up so that you can observe the birds without disturbing them, which is particularly useful for wildlife photography.
In addition to the birdlife, don't miss the rich and varied flora. The landscape is typical of wetlands, with reeds, irises, marshes and trees adapted to this environment. The walk takes place in a peaceful and revitalizing setting.
The Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave leisure center is not just a place for observation. It also offers other free activities :
