The medieval town of Cordes-sur-Ciel is a magnificent jewel of Occitanie. A bastide town with a picturesque heritage that's a pleasure to discover all year round! The beginning of spring is palpable: the trees are starting to bud and the beautiful days are getting longer. Take advantage of this to join us for a stroll through this lovely village, which, even out of season, holds breathtaking discoveries in store for you.

Cordes-sur-Ciel, an open-air history book

Since its creation in 1222, Cordes-sur-Ciel has amazed and fascinated. Its steep terrain and dominant position on a rocky promontory make it proud and admirably standing facing the world!

It is a Grand Site Midi Pyrénées, meaning it is recognized for its exceptional heritage and protected as such. Since 2014, Cordes-sur-Ciel's renown has increased even further thanks to its election as "France's Favorite Village" in a television program of the same name.

Cordes-sur-Ciel is a village that children generally love, enjoying getting lost in its maze of steep, winding alleyways. It's a playground best enjoyed in the spring, as it becomes a bustling tourist area in the summer. Many artists and art galleries, as well as artisans, exhibit their work in this inspiring village. The leather trade and the expertise of local craftsmen brought renown to the town in the Middle Ages. This resulted in sumptuous villas (such as the Maison du Grand Veneur), reflecting the importance of this economic hub at the time.

Here, it's as if time stood still in the 13th century. At the Tourist Office, you'll receive excellent advice and they'll even recommend a route that takes you to interpretive panels throughout the town. Of course, you'll explore the village on foot, so wear good shoes (avoid heels on the steep cobblestone streets!). Pass through the three beautiful gates: the Victor's Gate (12th century, and this is the entrance to the upper part of the village), the Elm Gate on the west side of town, and the Clock Gate, which originally had no ornamentation (it was added and named later).

Cordes-sur-Ciel is a village with Cathar origins; many battles were fought within its walls. How many hid in the hidden corners of the half-timbered buildings during the Albigensian Crusade? How many fell into the "Well of the Market Hall," an unfathomable pit over 100 meters deep? Take a stroll through the Gothic-style Church of Saint-Michel, home to beautiful frescoes. The Gardens of Paradise are also sure to take your breath away: each year, they feature a new theme.

Strolling and having fun in Cordes-sur-Ciel

The Cérou River flows at the foot of the town; it was this river that once allowed tanners to work the leather (this activity requires a great deal of water, as the hides must be cleaned, scraped, and immersed to relax them). While strolling along its banks, one can see the Cajarc Mill. Hiking trails are available in the Cérou Valley, much to the delight of walkers.

What you absolutely must not miss in Cordes-sur-Ciel is the morning climb to the very top of the village, to appreciate (at the place called Pied Haut), a superb view of the countryside and in autumn and spring, the sea of clouds that rises gently.

Feeling hungry? Head up to the village heights to discover a must-try gourmet restaurant in Cordes-sur-Ciel: La Table du Ciel. For lunch or dinner, you'll have the pleasure of enjoying 100% local, homemade cuisine with a breathtaking view of the fortified town from the terrace.
