The Cammazes are above all a commune on the border between the Tarn and the Aude, at the foot of the Black Mountain. It is an exceptional environment where the water runs down the slopes of the Montagne Noire and forms the Sor Gorges. In the 17th century, Vauban built a very innovative work there for its time: a canal sheltered by a vaulted tunnel. It is called the Vauban vault, even though the project was initiated by Pierre-Paul Riquet. It covers part of the Rigole of the Black Mountain. In the 1950s, this canal was redeveloped to collect water from the mountains to supply the Midi Canal. The Cammazes Dam therefore retains the water recovered from the Cammazes Lake and allows the canal's water level to be managed. The Cammazes are thus part of the sources of the Canal du Midi.
You can follow the Rigole on a path laid out for walking and cycling. Many other walks are accessible in the town of Cammazes. In particular, you can walk on the heights of the lake and enjoy the panorama from the dam. However, the tour of the lake is not accessible. The Cammazes Lake is a fishing spot renowned for its predators. You can also learn to climb in the Gorges du Sor, thanks to the Via Ferrata de Malamort.
