The Millau viaduct, a technical and human feat to visit in Aveyron

Incredible but true, the construction of this unique bridge lasted only 3 years ! A feat when we know the technical challenges of the design of this multi-stayed structure, which fits perfectly into the landscape of the Grands Causses. At the origin of the project, 3000 workers and two men who work together for the success of this ambitious adventure: the engineer Michel Virlogeux and the architect Lord Norman Foster. The first stone was laid on December 14, 2001, with an inauguration 3 years later to the day by the President of the Republic Jacques Chirac. You count well! This year, the Millau viaduct is celebrating its 20th anniversary, an opportunity for its teams to put together a special program for you. Every two years, a running race is also organized on the motorway, an additional boon this year since the Eiffage Race of the Millau Viaduct in Aveyron takes place on September 22, 2024, to the great pleasure of athletes and residents.

The Millau viaduct area, a tourist site to discover

Then pass through the gate of an old farm Caussenarde which hosts the Viaduc Expo, a free museum space open all year round. Fabulous bit of engineering but not marketed as a tourist attraction. There is supposed to be a viewing spot but we followed the sign(s) but never found it. We pulled over underneath and got some photos. Then driving over it is a 20-40km loop from there.

The Millau Viaduct is a remarkable cable-stayed bridge located in southern France. It spans the Tarn River Valley and is renowned for being the tallest bridge in the world. Designed by the architect Sir Norman Foster and structural engineer Michel Virlogeux, the viaduct was completed in 2004. Its highest mast peaks at an impressive 343 meters (1,125 feet) above the base of the structure. The Millau Viaduct has not only become an engineering marvel but also a symbol of modern architecture, seamlessly blending with the picturesque landscape of the region. Its construction aimed to alleviate traffic congestion in the area, providing a smooth passage for vehicles traveling between Paris and the Mediterranean coast. The viaduct's elegant design and innovative engineering have garnered international acclaim, making it a prominent landmark in France.
