    • The Millau Viaduct, an unmissable site in Aveyron

If you are driving on the A75 motorway between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers, you will have the chance to cross the famous Millau Viaduct : an impressive structure, not to be missed! Take the time to stop at the Millau Viaduct rest area, and come and admire this concrete and steel giant. Accessible in both directions of traffic, this rest area is an emblematic place in the Aveyron region. Another particularity of this rest area is that it is accessible off the motorway, making it a tourist site in its own right.

The Millau Viaduct, a technical and human feat

Incredible but true: the construction of this bridge lasted only 3 years ! A feat when you consider the technical challenges of designing this multi-cable structure, perfectly integrated into the landscape of the Grands Causses. At the head of this project, two men working in unison: the French engineer Michel Virlogeux and the English architect Lord Norman Foster. But the adventure would not be the same without the 3,000 companions who worked, directly or indirectly, to ensure the success of this extraordinary project. The first stone was laid on December 14, 2001 and the structure was inaugurated on December 14, 2004. You count: 3 years to the day ! In 2024, the Millau Viaduct celebrated its 20th anniversary. On this occasion, 20 days of celebration were organized. Between September 3 and 22, Millavois, Aveyronnais and visitors from all over the world responded and made Millau vibrate with their great enthusiasm. As a highlight of these festivities, the runners set off on the viaduct for the 7th edition of the Eiffage Millau Viaduct Race in Aveyron. Organized every two years, this event allows thousands of enthusiasts to run between heaven and earth.

The Millau Viaduct rest area, an area that doesn't look like one

Take a break at the Millau Viaduct rest area! Children can let off steam on the outdoor games and your four-legged friends in the agility area. In the old Caussenarde farm, push open the door to the Viaduc Expo. This museum space, with free access, is open all year round. The scenography is incredible, punctuated with testimonies, anecdotes and unpublished images on the construction of the bridge: a real dive into the conditions of its construction. Guided tours are also offered while the shop offers a large selection of souvenirs. Don't forget to go up to the belvedere ... and there: open your eyes and admire the Millau Viaduct ! With its 7 pylons and 154 stay cables, it almost looks like a sailboat floating above the valley. At the Espace Gourmand, taste pancakes filled with local products or leave with sweet snacks. A tourist site and unique site, the Millau Viaduct is an unmissable place to discover in Aveyron.
