    • Peyrelade Castle, a small medieval gem to discover in Aveyron

Experience a true journey back in time in the charming village of Rivière-sur-Tarn, home to a magnificent 12th-century medieval fortress perched on a rocky spur. Open to visitors from April to October, it has a rich history to tell and a few surprises in store for a wonderful family day out.

The most important medieval fortress in Rouergue during the Middle Ages

This historic building has enjoyed a golden age, thanks to its ideal location overlooking the valley and the entrance to the Tarn Gorges. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it belonged to the Ahenric family before passing into the hands of various lords over time, and even being requisitioned by mercenary bands and the English. After centuries of neglect, Château Peyrelade has been restored through a meticulous renovation that has been underway for over 40 years, offering the opportunity to discover and reveal the secrets carefully preserved within its stones all these years. A self-guided or guided tour is a wonderful way to step back in time and discover the history of this historic castle, admiring its unique architecture along a themed route featuring models, interpretive panels, and a video. The highlight of the experience is atop the rocky outcrop, which offers a breathtaking view of the valley.

Château Peyrelade, a superb family outing in Aveyron

On Wednesdays from mid-July to the end of August, children take on the role of kings and knights with activities such as treasure hunts, craft workshops, a mystery investigation, or storytelling filled with magic. Picnic tables are available, as well as a shop where you can buy a souvenir. Every year, the Château de Peyrelade regains its former glory during the medieval summer days, every Sunday and Monday from mid-July to the end of August. It's an opportunity to feast, battle, and experience the thrill of knighthood! Exhibitions of weapons, armor, and details of daily life from the period are also on display, to be explored to the sound of atmospheric music.

Enjoy your visit to Château Peyrelade!

Magnificent! However, you shouldn't be afraid of climbing stairs... A visit I highly recommend.
