Founded in 1214 by the Templar Guiriaudus de Mauriaco (hence the name Mauriac), the château was restored over many years by its owner, the painter Bernard Bistes, and his family, who fell in love with this listed Historic Monument, featured in the Michelin Green Guide. Known until the 17th century as a pastel-growing château, it was the center for cultivating pastel, the dye used to color clothing blue. This entire history, along with its revival and renovation, is presented during a one-hour guided tour of the château grounds, offering a glimpse into life at the time, as well as the lives of the Bistes family, who still reside there. Fully furnished, the Château de Mauriac is recognized as one of the 50 most beautiful private residences in France and is a must-see in the Tarn region.
