I really enjoyed visiting the village of Decazeville (Zip code F-12 300) in Aveyron. It's a former mining town where coal was mined exclusively in open-pit quarries. This mining village was founded in the 19th century around the coal mines created by Élie Decazes, after whom it is named. The site is closely linked to pilgrimage, with a mix of visitors, hikers, pilgrims, and cultural tourists. Pilgrims are frequent visitors since the village is located on the Way of St. James (GR 65). Following my visit in September 2025, I can provide you with a practical and concise guide to the village of Decazeville in Aveyron, with everything you need to know: Where is Decazeville? Occitanie, northwest of Aveyron, approx. 30 km from Rodez and 20–27 km from Figeac (Lot Valley). Postcode 12300. This is a commune whose town hall is located at Place Decazes, 12300 Decazeville. Must-sees: La Découverte (former open-pit mine) & restored headframe: viewpoints, trails, guided tours via the Tourist Office. Mining and industrial heritage (2-hour tour/tour for groups; ASPIBD association museum depending on the season). War memorial (miner's lamp) and urban statues (Decazes, Cabrol, etc.). Notre-Dame Church & Gustave Moreau's Stations of the Cross. Notre-Dame Church (Place Wilson), listed as a historic monument; Stations of the Cross (14 stations) painted by Gustave Moreau around 1863: a rare symbolist ensemble in the provinces. Visits/times vary depending on the parish. Cafés and bars (highly rated/popular): Corner Coffee Shop (new artisanal coffee shop in the city center, opening in August 2025). Mousses du Rouergue (craft brewery & beer bar, 26 rue Cayrade). Le New Bar (friendly bar, 47 rue Gambetta). Recommended restaurants (in the city): O' Basilic (French/homestyle cuisine, 3 avenue du 10 Août 1944). Pizzeria Le Wilson (wood-fired pizzas, 3 place Wilson). L'Endroit (grill/brasserie, 38 rue Cayrade). Hotels (in Decazeville): Hôtel Malpel – simple and central (23 avenue du 10 Août 1944). Hôtel Foulquier – affordable (15 boulevard Carnot). Atmosphere & Decor: Atmosphere of a converted working-class town, marked by a spectacular post-mining landscape; land art interventions on the La Découverte site (e.g., Saype fresco), and furniture/statues recalling the industrial era. Practical information: Tourist Office – Square Jean-Ségalat, 12300 Decazeville (information, visits to La Découverte, prices). On the GR65 (Via Podiensis): typical stops: Conques → Decazeville (18.5 km) then Decazeville → Figeac (27 km). Train access: Viviez–Decazeville station (nearby); TER Occitanie & Intercités; address: Avenue de la Gare, 12110 Viviez. liO bus: departmental lines including 204 Decazeville ↔ Rodez; information/timetables on the liO website. What I liked about my visit: The lunar panorama of La Découverte and its photogenic headframe. Moreau's Stations of the Cross, a veritable "museum" in the church. The omnipresent working-class memory and the simple, authentic welcome. In summary, I can say that Decazeville is a small town in Aveyron, born from the coal mines and today dedicated to promoting this heritage. You can admire La Découverte (a former open-pit mine), heritage trails, and Notre-Dame Church with Gustave Moreau's Stations of the Cross. Cafés, a craft brewery, and down-to-earth restaurants complete this stop, which is convenient for hikers on the GR65. I recommend visiting the village of Decazeville (F-12 300) in Aveyron. I have attached some photos and videos. Please add a smiley face, a thumbs up, a heart, or something else, etc., under the review and photos to encourage me in my efforts. It's always nice to receive kind feedback. Enjoy your visit. Best regards, Éric Tison F-57 Féy (Metz, Moselle, France).
