  Beautiful village. A quick note for the fisherman who called us over to draw our attention to the phenomenon occurring with the dam's "cascades." I hope he sees this message. Thank you to him already, because we would undoubtedly have walked right past it without noticing. When water flows over the crest of a dam like this, it forms an extremely smooth and uniform sheet of water—a laminar flow, almost without turbulence. At this precise moment, before the fall begins to create foam and chaotic movement, this sheet behaves like a perfect mirror. This is Fresnel's principle: at a grazing angle of incidence, any transparent surface—including water—becomes highly reflective. Here, the horizontal surface of the water on the crest of the sill captures the landscape opposite—the building, the cliff—and reflects it back into the "cascade" that falls immediately beyond. The vertical curtain of water then acts as a dynamic reflective panel, moving but continuous enough for the reflection to be visible. Why it's more impressive in real life than in a photo: our 3D brain, with its movement and parallax, better perceives the discontinuity between "falling water" and "the image displayed on it." A flat photograph diminishes the element of surprise. This isn't a common occurrence because it requires the right conditions all at once: a steady flow, a clean and horizontal weir crest, the correct viewing angle, and raking light. Fifteen years of fishing there without noticing it is entirely plausible. That's the brief scientific explanation for this curiosity. But for the uninitiated, it's pure magic!
